Unstable weather conditions are expected across Azerbaijan starting from the western regions from March 7 until the afternoon of March 9, with intermittent precipitation and snowfall forecasted for mountainous and foothill areas.
The National Hydrometeorological Service reported to Operative Information Center-OMM that the intensity of precipitation is expected to increase in specific areas, leading to rising water levels in rivers. There is a high probability of short-term floods in some rivers of the Lankaran-Astara region.
The National Hydrometeorological Service has also issued a yellow warning regarding the expected windy weather conditions on March 7 in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, as well as several other regions. According to the service, north-westerly winds will prevail in Baku, the Absheron Peninsula, Khizi, Shabran, Khachmaz, Guba, Gusar, Siyazan, Neftchala, Salyan, Kalbajar, Lachin, Gazakh, Aghstafa, Tovuz, Shamkir, Ganja, Goygol, Samux, Dashkasan, Gadabay, Goranboy, Naftalan, Yevlax, Tartar, Barda, Mingachevir, Shirvan, Lerik, and Yardimli. Wind speeds are projected to reach 13.9-20.7 m/s, while temperatures are expected to drop by 5-8 degrees compared to previous days.
In Azerbaijan, the National Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources regularly monitors atmospheric conditions to provide early warnings for extreme weather events. Such seasonal transitions in the Caucasus region often bring rapid changes in air pressure, resulting in the strong north-westerly winds locally known as the 'Khazri,' which can impact maritime operations in the Caspian Sea and infrastructure in the capital.
