Large-scale firefighting operations are underway across several regions in Turkey as forest fires continue to spread, threatening residential areas.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, fires that broke out in forested areas of Mugla, Antalya, and Balikesir provinces have intensified due to strong winds. As the flames approached settlements, local authorities ordered the evacuation of numerous homes as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Coordinated by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, firefighting teams, volunteers, and local residents have been mobilized to combat the blazes. In Antalya's Alanya district, the fire spread rapidly, forcing the evacuation of 45 homes in the Sapadere, Fakırcalı, and Beldibi neighborhoods. Aerial operations, involving firefighting planes and helicopters, resumed at dawn to contain the spread.
Simultaneously, emergency crews are battling fires in the Bayır neighborhood of Mugla's Seydikemer district and the Yeşilüzümlü neighborhood of Fethiye. While the cause of the Fethiye fire remains under investigation, strong winds have accelerated its spread. In Seydikemer, residents have relocated livestock and personal belongings to safer zones.
In Balikesir's Gomeç district, operations have entered their second day. The effort to extinguish the fire near the Kumgedik neighborhood involves 6 aircraft, 5 helicopters, 30 pieces of heavy equipment, and a personnel force of 658. Additionally, residents of the Tıfıllar neighborhood in the Ayvalık district were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Turkey is frequently prone to forest fires during the summer months due to its Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by high temperatures and dry conditions. The Turkish government typically employs a robust aerial firefighting fleet, including specialized aircraft and helicopters, to manage these seasonal threats and protect the country's extensive forest cover.
