Hundreds of people gathered in Stockholm on Saturday to protest Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Agency reported.
The demonstrators assembled in the Radmansgatan area following a call by civil society organisations and marched towards parliament, demanding an immediate end to what they described as war crimes against civilians in the Palestinian enclave.
Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners reading “Free Palestine, Free Gaza”, “Stop the Genocide” and “Boycott Israel”. They chanted slogans including “Children are being killed in Gaza” and “Freedom for Palestine”.
The demonstrators also accused the United States of being complicit in alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Activist calls for pressure on politicians
Swedish activist and comedian Kerim Arslanagic said he joined the protest to express solidarity with Palestinians.
“This has been continuing for Palestinians since 1948. This is an ongoing genocide and a colonial project,” he told Anadolu.
Arslanagic said the oppression, lack of food and inadequate infrastructure faced by Palestinians represented a profound loss for humanity. He also urged individuals and artists to use their public platforms to pressure politicians.
“If we make our voices heard, we can change things,” he said.
Casualties reported since October 2023
Following the events of Oct. 7, 2023, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza that has killed nearly 74,000 people, injured 175,000 and reduced much of the enclave to ruins, according to the report.
Although a ceasefire took effect last October, Israel has continued to carry out attacks, killing more than 1,400 Palestinians and injuring nearly 5,000, Gaza’s Health Ministry said.
A United Nations-commissioned inquiry has said Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
