Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv is “very open” to Türkiye hosting a trilateral leaders’ meeting on peace negotiations with Russia, according to the morning briefing.
Speaking after talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Zelenskyy described the meeting as productive and said Erdogan had offered to host a summit at the leaders’ level. Zelenskyy said Ukraine would support holding the meeting in Türkiye and would be ready to attend.
Walkouts during Netanyahu’s UN address
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly before a largely empty hall after delegations from several countries walked out in protest over Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.
Large demonstrations were also held near the UN headquarters and elsewhere in New York. Protesters condemned Netanyahu’s appearance and accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court on allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the enclave.
Erdogan calls for UN veto reform
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the abolition of the UN veto mechanism, arguing that the current structure allows the interests of five permanent Security Council members to constrain the will of more than 190 countries.
Speaking to journalists at the Turkish House in New York after attending the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Erdogan called for a stronger and more effective General Assembly and a more inclusive international system.

Business and sport
The United States and China agreed to extend their bilateral trade truce through Jan. 10, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. He also indicated that further agreements could involve Chinese purchases of US agricultural products and financial services deals.
In sport, Israel forward Saied Abu Farchi was sent off during a 3-1 Nations League defeat by Austria after using a corner flag to mimic a gun while celebrating his goal. He had been booked four minutes earlier and received a second yellow card for the gesture.
