Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Saturday that he and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul had discussed ways to increase pressure on Russia and strengthen Ukraine’s resilience ahead of winter.
Writing on the US social media platform “X”, Sybiha said Wadephul had briefed him on the outcome of his earlier meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
“I am grateful to Minister Wadephul for conveying our firm shared positions to the Russian side: insisting that Moscow end its war, reaffirming unwavering support for Ukraine, and warning against further hostile actions against Europe,” Sybiha said.
Ministers discuss ceasefire efforts
The two foreign ministers also discussed their next joint steps to promote peace efforts and secure a ceasefire, Sybiha added.
Lavrov and Wadephul had earlier held talks in their first meeting since Russia launched its war against Ukraine in February 2022, according to the source.
First meeting since February 2022
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the discussions covered bilateral relations and “the situation surrounding Ukraine”. It added that Wadephul had “reaffirmed the position of the German government that has been publicly stated on numerous occasions”.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova separately said Germany had requested the meeting.
