Spain began their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 3-2 victory over England in a thrilling A3 group match at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday.
Spain took the lead after just two minutes when Marc Guehi attempted to turn the ball back to his goalkeeper. Lamine Yamal pressed the defender, won possession and curled a shot into the far corner.
England levelled in the 36th minute through a swift counterattack. After Nico Williams lost the ball outside the penalty area, Jude Bellingham advanced quickly before finding Antony Gordon, who fired past the advancing Unai Simon with England’s first shot on target.
The hosts completed the turnaround three minutes later. Nico O’Reilly delivered a cross into the area and Harry Kane’s header struck Marc Cucurella before ending up in the net in the 40th minute.
Spain respond after missed penalty
Spain pushed for an equaliser before the break, with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres both going close, but they could not find a second goal before half-time.
England were awarded a penalty shortly after the restart after Rodri fouled Bellingham. Kane stepped up but struck the crossbar.
Spain increased the pressure following the missed spot-kick and restored parity in the 60th minute. Yamal won possession from O’Reilly and linked up with Dani Olmo before Alex Baena curled the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Oyarzabal restores Spain’s lead
Spain regained the advantage in the 74th minute. Mikel Oyarzabal, who had come on 20 minutes earlier, received a pass from Baena during a run into the box and calmly lifted the ball over England goalkeeper James Trafford despite the defenders around him.
England pressed for another equaliser during the final quarter, creating several threatening opportunities, but Spain’s defence held firm and kept out attacks led by Bellingham.
