The European Union has extended the mandates of its civilian missions in the Palestinian territories for nine months, until June 30, 2027, the EU Council said on Monday.
The renewal applies to the EU Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point, known as EUBAM Rafah, and the EU Police Mission for the Palestinian Territories, or EUPOL COPPS.
Support for Gaza peace efforts
The decision follows conclusions adopted by EU leaders in June, reaffirming the bloc’s commitment to international law and a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” based on a two-state solution.
The EU also reiterated its readiness to support the implementation of a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, including through the two missions.
Roles of the EU missions
The extension was approved after a strategic review by the European External Action Service and by the EU’s Political and Security Committee. It was also based on letters from the Palestinian Authority and Israel, according to the Council statement.
Launched in 2005, EUBAM Rafah supports the development of effective and sustainable border management at the Rafah crossing.
EUPOL COPPS, established in 2006, assists Palestinian efforts to strengthen policing and criminal justice institutions.
