FIFA has officially announced that Armenia and Georgia will jointly host the 2029 U-20 World Cup.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the decision was finalized during the FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, marking a significant milestone for the South Caucasus region.
The joint bid from the two neighboring nations was approved by the organization's executive body. The Football Federation of Armenia described the selection as a historic event, noting that it will be the first time the country hosts a major global football tournament. As part of the preparations, new stadiums are planned for construction in Dilijan and Ijevan, located near the border with Georgia. In addition to existing venues such as the Republican Stadium, the final design for a new National Stadium is expected to be approved in the near future.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup is a biennial championship for male players under the age of 20 and is considered one of the most prestigious youth tournaments globally, often serving as a launching pad for future international stars. By hosting this event, Armenia and Georgia aim to enhance their sports infrastructure and promote regional cooperation through athletics. This selection follows a growing trend of FIFA awarding hosting rights to joint bids to share the logistical and financial responsibilities of large-scale sporting events.
