The Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Azerbaijan, Mariyana Kuyuncic, has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
According to information provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Operative Information Center-OMM, the meeting focused on the firm condemnation of unfounded and biased provisions against Azerbaijan contained in the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on April 30. A formal note of protest was presented to the diplomat during the session.
The MFA emphasized that the provisions in the resolution distort realities and contradict the principles of objectivity, as well as international obligations to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. It was highlighted that such an approach by the European Parliament negatively impacts the normalization process in the region and the future prospects of relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
Regarding claims about the return of Armenian residents to the Garabagh region, the Azerbaijani side stated these are completely groundless and constitute interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan. It was noted that despite the reintegration plan presented by Azerbaijan in 2023 in accordance with the Constitution, Armenian residents left the region voluntarily, and any statements claiming otherwise are false.
Furthermore, calls for the release of individuals of Armenian origin described as "prisoners of war" were labeled as legally unacceptable. The MFA reminded that while Azerbaijan has demonstrated a humanitarian approach by releasing many detainees as part of confidence-building measures, those currently in custody have been convicted of serious crimes, including terrorism, sabotage, and war crimes. Additionally, allegations concerning the "destruction of cultural and religious heritage" were rejected as unacceptable, with Baku pointing out that European institutions have historically ignored the large-scale destruction of Azerbaijani heritage during the period of occupation.
This diplomatic move comes amid Azerbaijan's ongoing efforts to solidify peace in the South Caucasus following the full restoration of its sovereignty. The Azerbaijani government has consistently maintained that international organizations must adopt a balanced and neutral stance to support the fragile peace process between Baku and Yerevan, rather than adopting resolutions that Baku views as politically motivated and detrimental to regional stability.
