Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he and US President Donald Trump agreed during a phone call on Sunday to meet in New York during this week’s United Nations General Assembly meetings.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Zelenskyy described the conversation as important and said the planned meeting could bring significant changes to diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.
“We just spoke with President Trump. An important conversation, and many things were discussed. We have arranged a meeting in New York, and this meeting can change a lot,” Zelenskyy said.
Discussions on de-escalation and security
Zelenskyy thanked Trump for the recent visit to Kyiv by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. He said the discussions had addressed substantive issues and that the US representatives had seen the situation in Ukraine firsthand.
“There are ideas on de-escalation steps and fundamental security issues – energy, food, and protection of people's lives,” Zelenskyy said.
New sanctions against Russia
The Ukrainian leader also thanked Trump for signing legislation sponsored by the late US Senator Lindsey Graham that approves new sanctions on Russia.
The meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
