Ukrainian forces struck eight infrastructure sites in various regions of Russia over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on the X platform.
According to Zelensky, the targets included an oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in northwestern Siberia and a port in Dagestan in the North Caucasus. Sites in the Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan and Bryansk regions were also reportedly hit.
A fire broke out after drone strikes hit port infrastructure in Makhachkala, a city on Dagestan’s Caspian Sea coast. Fyodor Shchukin, the region’s acting head, said the fire had been extinguished.
Eight people were injured in attacks involving maritime drones in Russia’s Sochi, while parts of the city’s coastal infrastructure were damaged. Reuters verified footage of an explosion that occurred during the incident.
Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia attacked the country overnight with 149 drones, 128 of which were destroyed. Russia’s Defense Ministry, meanwhile, said 448 Ukrainian drones had been shot down over various regions.
Four people were killed and 19 injured in Russian air strikes in Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region. Drone attacks in the Sumy region killed five people and wounded 24 others.
Zelensky is due to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday. The two leaders are expected to discuss Ukraine’s air defense preparations for the winter season and ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Separately, Reuters, citing Western officials, reported that NATO had thwarted a possible Russian operation targeting underwater cables in Arctic waters earlier this year. Britain, Norway and the United States reportedly tracked Russian vessels and stopped their activities.
The exchange of strikes comes amid the continuing Russia-Ukraine war, in which both sides regularly report attacks on military, energy and transport infrastructure. Independent verification of battlefield claims is often difficult.
