Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has ordered the removal of administrative restrictions imposed on several websites and media outlets following dialogue between the government and various sectors of society, according to the Communication and Information Ministry.
Rodriguez welcomed progress in talks between government representatives and former lawmakers from the 2015 National Assembly, as well as discussions held under the Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence.
Government outlines media policy
The ministry said the authorities aim to ensure that national media outlets serve the public interest and safeguard Venezuelans’ right to receive truthful and timely information.
Earlier this month, the Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence recommended that the government remove restrictions on media domains. The recommendation followed consultations with national, public, private and alternative media outlets, along with social media influencers.
The initiative said the consultations were intended to promote “greater and better communication, transparency, diversity and pluralism”. It also called for measures to support freedom of expression “within a framework of respect and responsibility”.
Dialogue process and political detainees
Talks between the government and representatives of the 2015 National Assembly began in August as part of a broader dialogue process.
The government says the discussions are aimed at addressing political, economic and social issues while promoting coexistence among Venezuelans. In August, authorities announced the release of dozens of people detained in connection with political cases after the first round of talks.
