US President Donald Trump has described his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very productive”, saying the discussions covered artificial intelligence and the war in Iran during Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington, DC, according to Al Jazeera, AFP and Reuters.
Asked by reporters on Friday whether the two leaders had discussed the war in Iran, Trump replied: “We did.” He offered no further details, adding: “I think we’re going to do great.”
Trump said he would meet Xi twice more this year — in China in November and at the G20 summit in Miami, Florida, in December. He described the latest meeting as one of “Friendship, Strength, and Success” for both countries.
Xi invites Trump to visit China
During a tea ceremony at the White House, Xi invited Trump and first lady Melania Trump to visit China. He said the US-China relationship had become a constructive one based on “strategic stability” and founded on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
Xi’s visit was his first to the United States in more than a decade. Both leaders said they could have two further opportunities to meet before the end of the year.
Trump said earlier that “tremendous things will be happening” between the United States and China. He also highlighted artificial intelligence, saying Xi appeared to favour calling the technology “SUPER INTELLIGENCE” rather than artificial intelligence.
AI cooperation and Iran discussions
Trump hosted a state dinner for Xi on Thursday, attended by prominent figures including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla chief Elon Musk.
The two countries remain strategic rivals in artificial intelligence. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington and Beijing were seeking to establish communication channels on AI, comparing the potential arrangement to the direct communication line between the Kremlin and the White House during the Cold War.
Greer said another meeting between representatives of the two countries on artificial intelligence was planned within the next month. He added that the latest discussions did not cover the possible sale of a limited quantity of high-end US-made chips requiring export licences.
On Iran, US Ambassador to China David Perdue said Trump had told Xi that direct or indirect support for Iran was “totally unacceptable”. Perdue later said China had assured the United States it was moving away from supporting Iran.
The leaders presented an image of cooperation between the world’s two largest economies, although the visit produced no major breakthroughs on trade or AI safety.
