At least two people were killed and 20 others injured on Sunday in drone attacks by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on residential neighbourhoods in the country’s central Kordofan region, according to the Sudan Doctors Network.
The independent medical group said the RSF used guided drones to target several neighbourhoods in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, from dawn until midday. The attacks caused civilian casualties and damage to property, it added.
Medical group calls for attacks to stop
The network described the strikes as a continuation of alleged RSF violations against civilians, warning that they were putting lives at risk and further worsening El-Obeid’s humanitarian and healthcare conditions.
It called on the RSF leadership to halt the attacks. The paramilitary group had not issued an immediate comment by 1650 GMT.
War has displaced millions
On August 24, the United Nations said that 1,100 civilians had been killed in drone attacks across Sudan between January and June this year.
Sudanese authorities and rights groups have accused the RSF of targeting civilian facilities. The group generally does not respond directly to such allegations, while saying it works “to protect civilians.”
Sudan has been gripped by war between the army and the RSF since April 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, according to United Nations and international estimates.
