Snow Depth Exceeds One Meter in Azerbaijan Amid Cold Wave

National Hydrometeorological Service reports record snowfall in Lerik as temperatures drop to minus 18 degrees

The actual weather conditions in Azerbaijan as of 10:00 AM on January 21 have been announced.

According to information provided by the National Hydrometeorological Service to the Operative Information Center-OMM, precipitation continues across most of the country, with sleet and snow observed in several regions. The unstable weather conditions have led to significant snow accumulation, particularly in the mountainous districts of Azerbaijan.

Highest Snowfall Recorded

According to the report, the height of the snow cover varied across different districts, with the highest level recorded in Lerik at 116 cm. The snow depth in other regions is as follows:

  • Mountainous areas of Astara – 70 cm
  • Yardimli – 49 cm
  • Alibay (Zaqatala), Kalbajar – 42 cm
  • Shahbuz – 32 cm
  • Saribash (Qakh) – 28 cm
  • Shusha – 27 cm
  • Kishchay (Sheki) – 24 cm
  • Khizi – 22 cm
  • Khankendi, Griz – 20 cm
  • Khaltan – 18 cm
  • Jalilabad – 16 cm
  • Lachin, Qubadli, Laza (Gusar) – 15 cm
  • Shamakhi, Shirvan – 13 cm
  • Ivanovka (Ismayilli), Khinalig – 12 cm
  • Khojaly, Gobustan, Sharur – 10 cm
  • Shahdag, Bilasuvar – 9 cm
  • Quba, Gadabay – 8 cm
  • Fuzuli, Oguz – 7 cm
  • Imishli, Nakhchivan – 6 cm
  • Dashkasan, Gabala, Sadarak – 5 cm
  • Tartar, Aghdam, Goychay – 3 cm
  • Jeyranchol – 2 cm

Precipitation Levels

The amount of precipitation fallen in recent hours has also been disclosed. The highest rainfall was recorded in Beylagan and Lankaran at 24 mm. In other areas:

  • Baku and the Absheron Peninsula – 15 mm
  • Sabirabad – 13 mm
  • Astara – 12 mm
  • Kurdamir – 9 mm
  • Tovuz, Zardab, Mingachevir – 6 mm
  • Balakan, Yevlakh – 5 mm
  • Ganja, Shamkir – 4 mm
  • Agstafa, Neftchala – 3 mm
  • Shabran – 2 mm
  • Goygol – 1 mm

Fog and Visibility

Foggy weather conditions are being observed in several cities and districts. Visibility has been limited to 500 meters in Sumgait, Goygol, Ganja, Naftalan, Shamkir, Balakan, Qakh, Sheki, Oguz, Gabala, Shamakhi, Gobustan, Griz, Yardimli, and Lerik.

Minimum Temperature Indicators

The minimum recorded temperatures are as follows:

  • Baku and the Absheron Peninsula – 1°C frost
  • Aran (lowland) districts – 2°C frost
  • Nakhchivan AR – 15°C frost
  • Mountainous regions – 9°C frost
  • High-altitude mountainous areas – up to 18°C frost

When will the weather stabilize?

According to forecasters, weather conditions are expected to gradually stabilize starting from the afternoon of January 21. From January 22 to 25, mostly dry weather is expected in most regions, with rising temperatures and prevailing mild south-westerly winds.

The National Hydrometeorological Service of Azerbaijan regularly monitors atmospheric conditions to provide timely warnings regarding extreme weather events. Such heavy snowfall in the southern and mountainous regions is characteristic of the winter season in Azerbaijan, often impacting transportation and infrastructure in high-altitude settlements like Lerik and Kalbajar.
