Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan Al-Fawzan has urged Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen and Saudi soldiers deployed along the border to remain united in confronting the Houthis, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
In a statement issued on Thursday and addressed to coalition forces and frontline troops, Al-Fawzan described the Houthis as “a misguided faction and deviant group” and called on soldiers to “cooperate with one another and unite your word.”
Protecting Saudi Arabia’s borders, “repelling aggression against them and punishing anyone who seeks to harm even an inch of it are among the greatest duties,” he said.
Calls to restore stability in Yemen
Saudi Arabia’s top religious authority also said restoring security and stability in Yemen under its legitimate leadership was “a paramount duty”.
The statement came as the Saudi-led coalition announced that it had intercepted and destroyed six Houthi ballistic missiles and foiled an attempt to target the cities of Taif and Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia.
Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia
Since July, Saudi Arabia has experienced an escalation in Houthi missile and drone attacks, with renewed fighting in Yemen spilling into the neighbouring kingdom.
In September, the coalition said it had intercepted attacks that allegedly targeted Riyadh, Makkah, Taif, Yanbu and other Saudi cities.
On September 19, the UN Security Council condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including those that caused civilian casualties and damaged energy facilities.
