Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced the launch of the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway line, marking a significant development in regional transport connectivity.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Pashinyan shared the announcement on his official Facebook social media account.
"I am pleased to announce that the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway, as well as the Azerbaijan railway, are henceforth open for exports and imports to Armenia. This is a major event in the economic life of our country. I thank our partners from Turkey and Georgia," Pashinyan wrote.
He noted that Armenia currently has railway connections with Russia through the territories of Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as with China through Russia and Kazakhstan. Now, a route passing through Georgia and Turkey, which ensures connection with the European Union, has been added to these directions.
Furthermore, the head of government pointed out that direct railway connections are expected to be launched soon between Armenia and Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and subsequently between Armenia and Iran via Nakhchivan.
"As a result of the implementation of the TRIPP project, we will witness these events in the near future," Pashinyan emphasized.
The unblocking of regional transport communications has been a key point of discussion in the South Caucasus. The Akhalkalaki-Kars railway is a crucial segment of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) regional rail link, which was officially inaugurated in 2017. Azerbaijan has consistently advocated for the restoration of all regional transport links, including the connection to Nakhchivan, to foster economic integration and stability in the region.
