Leyla Aliyeva, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, held a meeting with Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Bonn, Germany.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the discussion focused on Azerbaijan's ongoing efforts toward environmental protection, the preservation of biodiversity, and the assurance of ecological sustainability.
During the meeting, the initiatives and projects of the IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action) Public Union were highlighted. These include efforts to enrich biodiversity, raise environmental awareness, protect rare fauna species, and restore ecosystems. The parties also emphasized the importance of expanding protected natural areas and their critical role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
The conversation further addressed the declining water levels of the Caspian Sea. Both sides exchanged views on the prospects for jointly studying the causes of this phenomenon, as well as its ecological and socio-economic impacts. It was stressed that this issue requires greater prominence on the global climate agenda.
Additionally, the meeting explored opportunities for joint initiatives with the UNFCCC aimed at increasing the environmental responsibility of youth and expanding their knowledge regarding environmental protection and climate change.
The UNFCCC, headquartered in Bonn, serves as the primary international framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge of climate change. As Azerbaijan continues to play an active role in global climate diplomacy, such high-level engagements underscore the country's commitment to international environmental standards and collaborative climate action.
