President Ilham Aliyev receives IPU Secretary General

President Ilham Aliyev received the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong, on May 5 to discuss the evolving regional security landscape and bilateral cooperation.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that during the conversation, the previous meetings between the head of state and Martin Chungong were recalled with satisfaction. The IPU Secretary General congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on the achievements made regarding the advancement of the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the full restoration of the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty. The head of state expressed his gratitude for the congratulations.

President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the progress achieved in Washington concerning the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He noted that economic and trade relations have already commenced between the two countries, and Azerbaijan has unilaterally lifted restrictions on transit cargo destined for Armenia. The President's participation via video link in the 8th Summit of the "European Political Community" held in Yerevan was characterized as a historic event toward the normalization of relations. Furthermore, the head of state praised the IPU's role in facilitating parliamentary dialogue and regular meetings between the speakers of the Azerbaijani and Armenian parliaments to discuss the peace process.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, established in 1889, serves as a global organization for national parliaments, promoting democratic governance, institutions, and values. Azerbaijan has maintained an active presence within the IPU, utilizing the platform to foster inter-parliamentary diplomacy and address regional challenges. During the meeting, both parties emphasized the ongoing large-scale restoration and construction work in the liberated territories. They specifically addressed the severe landmine problem facing Azerbaijan, noting how these devices pose a significant threat to civilians and hinder the reconstruction process. The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on the current state of cooperation and the prospects for further developing parliamentary dialogue.
