The United States national debt has reached a historic milestone, surpassing the $40 trillion threshold for the first time.

According to the latest data released by the US Department of the Treasury, the country's total public debt stood at $40.047 trillion as of August 18, reports the Operative Information Center-OMM.

Of this total, $32.265 trillion is classified as debt held by the public, while $7.781 trillion consists of intragovernmental holdings.

The US national debt crossed the $30 trillion mark at the beginning of 2022. Consequently, the nation's debt burden has increased by approximately $10 trillion in less than five years. At the start of the current year, the total debt stood at $38.4 trillion.

Financial analysts attribute the rapid escalation of the US debt burden to several key factors. Large-scale stimulus programs implemented to support the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased government spending. Furthermore, high interest rates have raised the cost of servicing this debt, placing additional strain on the federal budget. Tax cuts are also cited as a contributing factor to reduced government revenue and a widening budget deficit.

The rapid growth of the US national debt has reignited debates regarding the country's long-term fiscal sustainability. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, economic policy remains a central focus, as policymakers grapple with balancing fiscal responsibility against the need for continued economic growth and stability in the world's largest economy.
