Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended a meeting of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement with his Saudi and Pakistani counterparts, diplomatic sources said on Friday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Fidan met Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar in New York on Thursday, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Ministers discuss institutionalizing defense cooperation
The discussions focused on progress in technical-level negotiations aimed at establishing the agreement’s institutional framework, the sources said.
The ministers also reviewed preparations for the next meeting of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee, which is expected to be held in the coming period.
Agreement signed at trilateral summit
Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed the defense agreement in August during a trilateral summit in Mecca. The deal seeks to strengthen collective security, expand defense cooperation and support peace and stability in the region and beyond.
Separately, Fidan held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in New York, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said in a post on “NSosyal”, a Turkish social media platform. Officials did not provide further details about that meeting.
