Azerbaijani grandmaster Aydin Suleymanli has secured a stunning victory over the 16th world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the match took place during the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship currently being held in Hong Kong.
Suleymanli’s triumph over the world-ranked leader has drawn significant attention from the international chess community. Ultimately, Azerbaijan’s “Odlar Yurdu” team defeated “WR Chess,” one of the tournament’s main favorites featuring Magnus Carlsen, with a final score of 3.5:2.5.
It is worth noting that the “WR Chess” roster includes elite grandmasters such as Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, making the victory particularly significant for the young Azerbaijani team.
The World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship is a prestigious event organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), bringing together top-tier clubs and national teams to compete in fast-paced formats. Currently, the “Odlar Yurdu” team, composed primarily of young, rising talents, holds 15 points and is positioned in 8th place in the tournament standings.
