The Australian government has announced the creation of a new state body aimed at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and strengthening oversight of major data centers operating in the country.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the decision announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese establishes the "Office of AI," which will operate directly under the Cabinet of Ministers and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
The Prime Minister stated that the new body will consolidate activities previously carried out across various departments under a unified management mechanism. According to Albanese, the primary objective is to ensure that the technology is deployed in Australia in a safe, efficient manner that aligns with national interests.
The new office is expected to provide more transparent approval mechanisms and streamlined compliance procedures for investors. Furthermore, legislation to be presented to parliament early next year is expected to include new requirements regarding the construction sites, energy consumption, and water usage of large-scale data centers.
Experts note that the rapid expansion of data centers could have significant implications for energy prices and environmental sustainability. Currently, Australia lacks comprehensive, dedicated legislation regulating the AI sector, with oversight primarily managed through existing frameworks concerning privacy, consumer rights, and voluntary ethical principles. The establishment of this office marks a significant shift toward formalizing the regulatory landscape for emerging technologies in the country.
