Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have launched a joint initiative to enhance emergency response, shelter support, and volunteer networks following high-level talks in Kabul.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the meeting featured ANDMA Director General Nuruddin Turabi and IOM Director Mihyung Park. The officials discussed disaster preparedness and the implementation of future humanitarian projects, emphasizing the urgent need to scale up aid delivery and strengthen disaster risk reduction programs. Turabi lauded the IOM’s role in Afghanistan, describing the organization as a vital partner in construction and preventative infrastructure projects.

Need for increased emergency assistance

According to official sources, both parties highlighted the necessity of expanding the scale of humanitarian aid. The joint statement noted an agreement to improve emergency relief, increase shelter support, and bolster disaster risk reduction programs. The ANDMA head emphasized that the National Information System for Disaster Management is vital for strengthening community resilience. In turn, Mihyung Park stated that she has instructed her teams to collaborate actively with local authorities to establish a robust national mechanism for disaster management.

Resumption of projects and funding

Regarding ongoing operations, the IOM official confirmed that previously suspended projects in Paktia province have been resumed and are nearing completion. Additionally, the construction of shelters for earthquake victims in the Kunar region is proceeding, with efforts underway to secure further donor funding. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to long-term cooperation aimed at increasing local capacity and ensuring a more effective response to natural disasters within the country.

Afghanistan remains one of the most disaster-prone regions in Central Asia, frequently facing earthquakes, flash floods, and prolonged droughts. International partnerships are considered essential for the country to manage the humanitarian impact of these events, particularly in remote provinces where infrastructure development remains a priority for the government and international observers.
