US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that “superintelligence”, his term for artificial intelligence, would dominate discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to Trump’s Truth Social posts.
“A big day with President Xi of China. Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion,” Trump wrote ahead of the leaders’ meeting in Washington, DC. He added that he wanted to leave the issue “exactly where it is”, saying China held the same position.
Trump proposed renaming artificial intelligence “superintelligence” during the UN General Assembly this week.
Trade and technology on agenda
The talks are also expected to cover artificial intelligence, trade, rare earth minerals and broader geopolitical tensions between the United States and China.
Trump personally welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington on Wednesday. It was the first time since 1962 that a US leader had received a foreign leader on the base’s tarmac, according to the information provided.
“I met President Xi at the plane (Airport!) yesterday and he looks strong, vibrant, and fit - Better than ever. Madam Xi, of course, BEAUTIFUL!” Trump wrote in a separate post on Thursday.
Xi to receive White House welcome
Trump is scheduled to host Xi at the White House on Thursday for an official welcome and military review. The two leaders will then hold closed-door one-on-one and delegation-level talks.
The day is due to conclude with a state dinner hosted by Trump and first lady Melania Trump for Xi and Peng.
Several prominent US technology and business figures are expected to attend, including SpaceX chief Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Apple CEO Tim Cook and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The leaders are scheduled to meet again on Friday before Xi departs Washington.
