Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said Yerevan wants to deepen ties with Russia and strengthen its partnership with the European Union as part of a balanced foreign policy.
Yerevan’s policy toward Russia
Pashinyan said Armenia was diversifying its foreign relations, describing the approach as a “balanced policy.” He said relations between Armenia and Russia were changing following the establishment of peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The prime minister said that previously, about 90% of Armenian-Russian relations had been based on security issues. He stressed that Yerevan intended to transform and deepen its relations with Russia in a constructive manner.
“We are taking a constructive position. We want to transform and deepen our relations with the Russian Federation in a constructive manner. We also intend to strengthen our friendly and fraternal relations with Russia,” Pashinyan said.
Cooperation with the European Union
In New York, Pashinyan also met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss Armenia-EU cooperation.
The Armenian government chief stressed the importance of EU support for diversifying the country’s economy and implementing democratic reforms.
Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union would continue supporting the Armenian government’s programs and expand cooperation in various areas. Regional issues were also discussed at the meeting.
