US President Donald Trump reprimanded CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins on Tuesday after she covered his appearance at the United Nations in New York, following his administration’s decision to bar the network and two other major media outlets from the White House grounds.
“All of the sleazebags, like third rate ‘reporter,’ Kaitlan Collins, of fake news CNN, a truly unhappy person, said they weren’t going to be covering me,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He questioned why media representatives were “ranting and raving” in the press section at the United Nations General Assembly.
The online criticism followed a direct exchange earlier in the day at UN headquarters. Collins asked Trump when the war in Iran would end, prompting the president to respond: “You should not be here covering me. You said you weren’t going to cover me. You shouldn’t be covering me.”
Dispute over UN media access
Collins replied that the UN had independently credentialed her and granted CNN access to cover the high-level debate of the 81st General Assembly.
Trump later intensified his criticism online, claiming that news organisations had an “addiction” to his presidency and describing network personnel as “sick, treasonous, and demented.”
Media outlets challenge White House ban
The confrontation came after the Trump administration revoked press access for journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW, preventing them from attending briefings and working inside the White House complex.
According to the original report, the media companies have challenged the credential revocations in court. The cases have fuelled an ongoing legal dispute in Washington over executive authority and press freedom.
