The Zaqatala Water Melioration Systems Operation Department, under the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan, has deployed heavy machinery to conduct urgent flood mitigation and riverbank reinforcement works across the region, following recent heavy rainfall.

This information was provided to the Operative Information Center-OMM by the Agency.

According to the report, reinforcement works are currently underway along the banks of the Tala River, specifically near the villages of Yuxari Tala, Ashagi Tala, Goyam, Dardoqqaz, Hoytala, and Yolayric. Similar operations are being conducted along the Muxaxchay River near the villages of Yuxari Chardaglar, Mamrux, Zayam, Chobankol, and Suvagil. Additionally, riverbed cleaning and bank reinforcement measures are being carried out on the left bank of the Katexchay River near Pashan village, as well as along the Bakmazchay River near the villages of Jar and Axaxdara. The primary objective of these interventions is to safeguard residential settlements, agricultural lands, and critical infrastructure from potential flood damage.

Beyond flood prevention, the Zaqatala Water Melioration Systems Operation Department continues to manage irrigation for local farmland and ensure the reliable supply of drinking water to the population. Technical teams are working to resolve any disruptions to water supply caused by recent weather events, ensuring that infrastructure remains operational despite the impact of intensive rainfall on water sources.

The Zaqatala region, located in the northwestern part of Azerbaijan, is characterized by mountainous terrain and numerous river systems, making it historically susceptible to flash floods during periods of intense precipitation. In early July, the region experienced heavy downpours that caused mountain rivers to overflow, prompting the State Water Resources Agency to initiate emergency response protocols. Authorities continue to monitor all mountain rivers in the district to ensure public safety.
