A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, prompting authorities to issue an immediate tsunami warning for several coastal regions.

Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Reuters and the Japan Meteorological Agency, reports that the earthquake's epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. Officials have issued tsunami warnings for Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido prefectures, advising residents to move to higher ground as waves reaching up to 3 meters are anticipated.

The quake registered as an "upper five" on Japan's seismic intensity scale, a level where structural damage and significant movement difficulties are expected. Japan is situated on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area of high seismic activity where several tectonic plates meet, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. The nation maintains a sophisticated early warning system and strict building codes designed to mitigate the impact of frequent tremors, ensuring rapid response to such natural disasters.
