Ten people, including eight children, sustained injuries following a bonfire explosion at the intersection of the 7th, 8th, and 12th districts in Sumgait, Azerbaijan.
According to information provided by the Ministry of Emergency Situations to the Operative Information Center-OMM, forces from the State Fire Protection Service were immediately dispatched to the scene. An initial assessment of the operational conditions revealed that the blast occurred when citizens attempted to ignite the bonfire using gasoline, resulting in a sudden and violent combustion.
Emergency crews implemented necessary security measures in the area and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The injured individuals were evacuated for medical treatment, and relevant authorities have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Sumgait, located on the Caspian Sea coast, is Azerbaijan's third-largest city and a major industrial hub. Such incidents often occur during seasonal festivities or local gatherings; however, emergency officials consistently warn the public against using accelerants like gasoline due to the high risk of volatile explosions and life-threatening injuries.
