Customs officials in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic have successfully intercepted a significant attempt to smuggle a large quantity of psychotropic substances through the territory of Azerbaijan. The operation was carried out by the staff of the Nakhchivan Main Customs Department of the State Customs Committee as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the seizure took place at the "Sadarak" customs post. The illicit cargo was discovered in a transit vehicle traveling from Iran to Türkiye. During a routine inspection using a stationary X-ray unit, customs officers noticed suspicious densities within the battery of the vehicle's trailer, prompting a comprehensive physical search.
The detailed inspection revealed six cellophane packages concealed inside the battery using methods designed to evade detection. The packages contained a total of 5 kilograms 254.397 grams of the potent psychotropic substance methamphetamine. An investigation into the incident is currently underway to identify the network behind the transit attempt.
The "Sadarak" customs post, located on the border with Türkiye, serves as a vital gateway for international transit corridors passing through Azerbaijan. Due to its strategic location, Azerbaijani customs authorities have intensified surveillance and modernized technical equipment to prevent the country from being used as a transit route for illegal narcotics. This seizure is part of a broader national strategy to secure borders and cooperate with international partners in the global fight against drug trafficking.
