A large-scale illegal drug trafficking operation has been thwarted in Ganja following a special operation conducted by the Ganja City Main Police Department.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) informed Operative Information Center-OMM that 33-year-old Adil Adilov was detained on suspicion of drug couriering. During the search, 27 kilograms and 475 grams of heroin with high-potency characteristics were discovered in a sports bag he was carrying and seized as material evidence.
In his testimony, the detainee stated that he obtained the narcotics through an Iranian citizen, whose identity is currently being investigated, after meeting on social media. He planned to deliver the substances to various addresses within the city. According to official data, the "black market" value of the heroin seized from Adilov is estimated at 1.6 million manats.
A criminal case has been initiated at the Ganja City Main Police Department regarding the fact. By court decision, a preventive measure in the form of arrest has been chosen for Adilov, and operational-investigative measures are currently ongoing.
Drug trafficking remains a significant challenge for law enforcement in Azerbaijan, which sits at a strategic crossroads between Asia and Europe. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service have intensified their crackdown on the "Balkan route" and other transit paths used by international syndicates. In recent years, Azerbaijani authorities have significantly increased the volume of seizures, particularly targeting synthetic drugs and heroin smuggled across the southern borders to protect the country's internal security and public health.
