Temporary traffic restrictions will be implemented on several streets and avenues in Baku on January 20 to mark the National Day of Mourning, with several bus routes set to be redirected. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Main State Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has issued a statement regarding the upcoming measures.
According to the MIA, vehicle movement will be completely suspended from 08:00 AM on January 20 until the conclusion of the commemorative ceremonies on all streets intersecting with or joining Parliament Avenue. These restrictions aim to ensure the comfortable, uninterrupted, and safe movement of citizens visiting the Alley of Martyrs to honor the victims of the January 20 tragedy. Traffic will be diverted to alternative routes from the intersections of Mikayil Mushfiq Street and Huseyn Javid Avenue, Mikayil Mushfiq Circle and Matbuat Avenue, Mehdi Huseyn Street, in front of the Teletheater building, and the intersection of Izzat Nabiyev and Abbasgulu Abbaszade streets behind the administrative building of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly).
The January 20 tragedy, also known as "Black January," refers to the violent crackdown by Soviet troops against the civilian population in Baku in 1990. This event is considered a turning point in the history of Azerbaijan's independence movement and is observed annually as a day of national remembrance. The Main State Traffic Police Department advises drivers to minimize the use of private vehicles on this day and instead utilize public transportation to avoid congestion in the capital.
