Operative Information Center-OMM reports potential solar activity

A severe geomagnetic storm is expected to impact Earth following recent solar activity, according to information provided to the Operative Information Center-OMM by the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory named after Nasiraddin Tusi.

The observatory stated that Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) resulting from a solar flare that occurred on January 18 are projected to reach Earth's atmosphere on January 20. Consequently, experts warn of a high probability of a powerful geomagnetic storm during this period.

Geomagnetic storms are temporary disturbances of the Earth's magnetosphere caused by solar wind shock waves and clouds of magnetic field that interact with the Earth's magnetic field. While such events can create stunning auroras, severe storms have the potential to disrupt satellite communications, GPS navigation, and power grid operations. The Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory, located in Azerbaijan, continues to monitor solar dynamics to provide timely updates on space weather conditions affecting the region and the planet.
