US President Donald Trump said the ongoing war with Iran would end immediately after congressional midterm elections. He claimed that oil prices would fall rapidly once the confrontation ended.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Trump made the remarks while traveling to Texas for the Republican Party’s first convention ahead of the congressional elections. He said Iran’s leadership was nearing the limits of its ability to resist.
The US president alleged that Iran was seeking to influence elections in the United States and aimed to bring a weak government to power that would allow Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons.
Iranian authorities continue to reject allegations that the country is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Trump said new talks with Iran were possible, but were not currently on the agenda.
The war, now entering its seventh month, was initially expected to last only a few weeks. However, its impact on fuel and food prices has led to a significant decline in public support in the United States.
Rising tensions in the Middle East and attacks on oil facilities in the region have pushed up global fuel prices.
Midterm elections are held halfway through a US president’s four-year term and determine the composition of both chambers of Congress. Oil prices are closely watched during geopolitical crises because disruptions to production or transport can affect global energy markets.
