Iran urges US to return to commitments under Islamabad memorandum

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

Araghchi said the situation in the region stemmed from the United States’ failure to fulfill its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum.

“The solution is simple. The US side’s return to the commitments it undertook in the signed Islamabad memorandum will open the way to normalization,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Araghchi also briefed his Japanese counterpart on talks with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He said significant progress had been made in negotiations to establish a temporary route for passage through the strait between the two countries.

Motegi, for his part, stressed the importance of continued consultations and diplomatic coordination among regional countries and relevant states to ensure security in the region, as well as free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The two ministers also agreed to work toward resolving certain bilateral and consular issues.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is a major route for global energy shipments, making security and freedom of navigation there a key regional and international concern.
