Typhoon Maysak, which struck the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China in early July, has caused severe devastation. Heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding and landslides, leading to significant infrastructure damage and loss of life across the region.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, local authorities have confirmed that 159 people have lost their lives in the cities of Nanning and Guigang, while 10 individuals remain missing. The natural disaster has affected more than 1.65 million people.

The scale of the catastrophe was exacerbated by the failure of the Liulan and Yunbiao dams. The collapse of these two structures alone resulted in 107 fatalities and 7 missing persons. Official reports indicate 136 deaths and 10 missing in Nanning, while 23 fatalities have been confirmed in Guigang.

Large-scale rescue and evacuation operations are currently underway to mitigate the consequences of the disaster and ensure public safety. In Nanning, 579,700 people have been affected by the floods; 23,300 have been relocated to safe areas, and 78,300 are currently housed in temporary shelters. In Guigang, 1.073 million residents have been impacted, with authorities evacuating 205,000 people and placing 15,000 in temporary shelters.

Rescue and recovery efforts continue, with search operations ongoing for the missing individuals.

China is frequently affected by typhoons during the summer months, which often bring torrential rains and high winds to its southern coastal provinces. These weather events pose significant challenges to disaster management authorities, necessitating robust infrastructure and emergency response protocols to protect vulnerable populations in low-lying areas.
