Thailand has summoned the Iranian ambassador to lodge a formal protest and strongly condemn an attack on a Thai-flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the incident was first disclosed by CNN, highlighting the escalating maritime security risks in the region.
According to official reports, the vessel "Mayuree Naree", flying the Thai flag, was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in an explosion and a subsequent fire on board. The Marine Department of Thailand confirmed that while 20 crew members have been rescued, three sailors remain missing following the assault.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severe regional instability. On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated military operations against Iran, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. In response, Iran has launched strikes against targets in Israel, as well as locations in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus, where military bases of the US and its allies are situated.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes. International maritime authorities have frequently warned that any disruption in this corridor poses significant risks to global energy security and international trade routes. The attack on the Mayuree Naree marks a significant escalation in the involvement of neutral commercial shipping in the ongoing regional conflict.
