North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced that the newly commissioned "Kang Kon" destroyer will serve as a key component of the country's nuclear response system.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing North Korea's state media outlet KCNA, the 5,000-ton destroyer is designed to deliver "devastating counterstrikes" against enemies. While the report did not explicitly confirm whether the vessel is currently equipped with nuclear weapons, the announcement marks a significant shift in Pyongyang's maritime strategy.
Speaking at a ceremony in the port of Wonsan, Kim Jong Un emphasized that deploying the destroyer in the waters off the Korean Peninsula serves as a clear message to the country's rivals. Experts suggest that "Kang Kon"-class destroyers could eventually function as platforms for maritime nuclear deterrence.
Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University, noted that the deployment is likely intended to deter naval operations conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan in the region. Although KCNA provided limited details on the ship's specific armament, analysts do not rule out the possibility that such destroyers could be equipped with missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The ceremony also drew attention due to the presence of Kim Jong Un's daughter, Kim Ju Ae, which South Korean intelligence interprets as an effort to position her as a potential successor. This development coincides with the start of the annual "Freedom Edge" military exercises involving the US, South Korea, and Japan.
Kim Jong Un further declared that a new phase in the development of the country's naval forces would be announced within the next eight months. He also confirmed that the construction of new military bases along North Korea's eastern coast is ongoing. South Korea's Ministry of Unification stated it is closely monitoring the situation, noting that discussions regarding the potential nuclear armament of Pyongyang's naval forces have intensified.
North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, has been accelerating its military modernization program in recent years.
