Saudi-led coalition Joint Forces Commander Lt. Gen. Fahd bin Hamad Al-Salman and Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council member Tareq Saleh discussed ways to improve coordination and strengthen the readiness of Yemeni forces across several fronts on Saturday, according to a coalition statement.
Al-Salman met Saleh, who also commands Yemen’s National Resistance Forces, at the Joint Forces Command headquarters in Riyadh. The two sides reviewed developments in Yemen and discussed coordinated efforts to support the readiness of Yemeni forces “on all fronts and axes” in pursuit of restoring the state and its institutions.
Focus on coordination and military readiness
Al-Salman praised Saleh’s role on the Presidential Leadership Council and his leadership of the National Resistance Forces. He also commended “the sacrifices made by their personnel in efforts to restore state authority and end the coup.”
Saleh, in turn, praised the support provided by the Joint Forces Command to Yemen’s military and the National Resistance Forces to strengthen their capabilities. He welcomed initiatives to unify ranks and rehabilitate military forces so they can carry out their duties.
The Yemeni official stressed the need to further improve readiness, coordination and integration among the forces in line with the requirements of the next phase.
Renewed fighting in Yemen
Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining unity, coordinating their efforts and roles, rehabilitating military units and increasing combat readiness as part of efforts to restore state institutions, security and stability in Yemen.
The meeting took place amid renewed fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis on several fronts.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthi group seized the national capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in 2015 to support the internationally recognized government.
Renewed fighting began in July after the Houthis declared a maritime blockade on Riyadh. The group has recently claimed advances along the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandab Strait, and has also targeted Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure.
