Nenad Popovic, Serbia's Minister for International Economic Cooperation, has declared that his country will never impose sanctions on Russia, despite facing intense external pressure. The statement underscores Belgrade's determination to maintain its strategic partnership with Moscow.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited international media reports, the minister emphasized that Serbia remains steadfast in its position. "We have not imposed sanctions on Russia and we never will. We are under immense pressure and even face political threats. However, we are firm in our position and we know who our friends are," the minister stated.
Popovic acknowledged that while the European Union remains Serbia's primary economic partner, the geopolitical landscape is shifting. He highlighted that the country's energy sector is heavily dependent on Russian supplies, which currently provide the most reliable gas deliveries and favorable terms. The minister further described sanctions as an "unjust tool" that fails to produce results, arguing that industrial sovereignty is a prerequisite for national sovereignty. He noted that many nations are awaiting the lifting of sanctions, recognizing the significant potential of the Russian market.
Serbia's stance on this issue is a defining feature of its foreign policy, balancing its aspirations for EU integration with its historical and economic ties to Russia.
