Drone strikes train locomotive near Ukraine-Poland border

Weekend strikes amid the Russia-Ukraine war have become a major focus of the international agenda. Ukrainian authorities said civilian and critical infrastructure was damaged in several parts of the country, including Kharkiv.

According to Ukrainian officials, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a train traveling near Yahodyn station, close to the Polish border. Ukrainian Railways said the drone had been detected before the strike and that passengers had been instructed to prepare for evacuation. No deaths or injuries were reported.

Ukraine said the strike may have targeted a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European security officials. The strike occurred shortly before the diplomatic train reached the area. Russia said it had targeted railway infrastructure in western Ukraine but did not comment on the claims concerning the diplomatic train.

Following the incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk held an emergency meeting attended by government members and military and intelligence officials. Polish government spokesman Adam Szlapka said the meeting focused on the country’s security situation.

The European Union strongly condemned the strikes near the Ukraine-Poland border, including the attack on a passenger train. European Commission spokesman Anouar El Anouni said the EU would continue supporting Ukraine’s defense and noted that aid worth 6.1 billion euros had been approved to help protect against air and missile attacks.

Boris Johnson also reacted to the incident, criticizing the strike on a stationary Ukrainian locomotive near the Polish border. He said it was an example of the attacks on civilian infrastructure that Ukrainians face every day.

Meanwhile, Oleh Syniehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, said the city had come under attack by drones and guided bombs over the previous 24 hours, leaving four people injured. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said 399 Ukrainian drones had been shot down overnight over Russia and the Black Sea.

The reported strike occurred amid continued attacks on transport and energy infrastructure during the war. Ukraine’s western regions, which serve as important routes for humanitarian aid, civilian travel and international support, have remained strategically significant.
