President Ilham Aliyev has signed a series of decrees ratifying several strategic agreements between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, the ratified documents, signed in Baku on June 22, 2026, cover key areas including economic development, defense, energy, customs statistics, and food safety.
Under the presidential decrees, the following agreements have been officially approved:
- Economic Cooperation: The agreement on the main directions for the development and deepening of economic cooperation between the governments of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. The Ministry of Economy is tasked with implementing its provisions.
- Defense Collaboration: The Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the defense sector. The Ministry of Defense is responsible for its execution.
- Energy Partnership: The agreement on cooperation in the energy sector, with the Ministry of Energy overseeing implementation.
- Customs and Trade: The protocol between the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan and the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan regarding cooperation in customs statistics for mutual trade.
- Food Safety: The agreement on cooperation in the field of food safety, to be implemented by the Food Safety Agency.
In each instance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has been instructed to notify the government of Turkmenistan regarding the completion of the necessary domestic procedures required for these agreements to enter into force.
These agreements underscore the strengthening ties between Baku and Ashgabat, reflecting a shared commitment to regional stability and economic integration. Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have increasingly sought to deepen their partnership, particularly in the energy sector, leveraging their strategic locations along the Caspian Sea to enhance trade routes and energy security for the broader region.
