Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he does not believe US President Donald Trump declared the Moon to be owned by the United States.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Peskov made the remarks in an interview with TASS.

He said Trump's phrase, “The Moon is ours,” should not be interpreted as the United States making a territorial or ownership claim over the Moon.

“When President Trump said, ‘The Moon is ours,’ I do not think he meant that it was their property. He expressed hope that American astronauts would set foot on the Moon again in the near future,” Peskov said.

The Kremlin spokesman said outer space should be an area of cooperation among countries rather than confrontation.

Peskov added that space could not in any way become an object of “privatization.”

Earlier, Donald Trump shared a photograph of the Moon, adding the words “The Moon is ours” and the US flag to the image.

The Moon is governed by international space law, including the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which establishes that celestial bodies are not subject to national appropriation.
