Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country's army chief, Asim Munir, are scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia on August 6, amid a surge in diplomatic activity across the region.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Al Arabiya television channel, that the high-level visit comes as Islamabad engages in ongoing consultations regarding the situation surrounding the conflict between the United States and Iran.
According to reports, the visit follows earlier disclosures by The National, which indicated that Washington and Tehran are working on a new version of a memorandum of understanding, mediated by Pakistan, originally concluded in June. A primary focus of these discussions remains the security of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Al Arabiya further noted that Iran has signaled a positive stance toward Pakistan regarding the potential opening of the Strait of Hormuz under international supervision. This diplomatic maneuvering occurs against a backdrop of persistent tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement in Yemen, which has previously declared a naval blockade on Saudi ports and claimed attacks on the Kingdom's oil tankers and infrastructure.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia maintain robust cooperation in the economic and defense sectors. In September 2025, the two nations signed a strategic defense agreement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan has previously emphasized that any attack on a vessel flying the Pakistani flag would be considered a direct threat to the country's national security.
The visit is viewed by analysts as a critical effort by Islamabad to leverage its historical ties with Riyadh to stabilize regional maritime corridors and prevent further escalation in the Middle East, a region vital to global energy security and international trade routes.
