Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has pledged to deepen relations with Bangladesh during his first meeting with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, according to a statement from the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. They reviewed bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in ties between the two countries.
Areas of cooperation
Sharif congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the presidency of the 81st General Assembly and voiced Pakistan’s support for Dhaka’s efforts to advance the objectives of the United Nations.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to further develop mutually beneficial relations with Bangladesh. Rahman likewise expressed satisfaction with the current trajectory of bilateral ties and his government’s desire to strengthen cooperation.
The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding collaboration in trade, investment, connectivity, education, tourism and people-to-people contacts.
Regional and global issues
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments and stressed the importance of continued coordination in multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha News reported that the two prime ministers discussed matters of mutual interest, regional and international situations and potential areas of cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.
They underlined the importance of advancing Bangladesh-Pakistan relations on the basis of mutual respect, understanding and cooperation. Rahman was elected prime minister in February this year.
