Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Islamabad’s “steadfast support” for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in New York, his office said on Thursday.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations, as well as developments in the Middle East and the wider region, according to a statement posted on Sharif’s official account on “X”.
Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity.
Pakistan calls for end to Israel-Lebanon hostilities
The Pakistani prime minister called for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, strict compliance with ceasefire arrangements and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.
He also urged the full implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Sharif and Salam discussed expanding cooperation through high-level exchanges, trade and investment, defence ties and institutional links. They also pledged to maintain coordination at the UN and other multilateral forums.
Sharif meets UN secretary-general
Separately, Sharif met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Wednesday.
Guterres thanked Pakistan for its role as an elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and for its contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, according to a UN readout.
The two officials also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East and Islamophobia.
The UN General Assembly’s General Debate began on Tuesday and is scheduled to continue through Sept. 28.
