Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Tarique Rahman, have pledged to strengthen bilateral relations during their first meeting, according to the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office.
The leaders met on Thursday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. They reviewed bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction with their positive momentum, the statement said.
Focus on trade and connectivity
Sharif congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the presidency of the 81st General Assembly and voiced Pakistan’s support for Dhaka’s efforts to advance the objectives of the United Nations.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to further develop mutually beneficial relations with Bangladesh. Rahman reciprocated and said his government was keen to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, education, tourism and people-to-people contacts.
Leaders discuss regional and global issues
They also exchanged views on regional and global developments and stressed the importance of continued coordination in multilateral forums, particularly at the UN.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha News, the premiers discussed matters of mutual interest, regional and international developments, and potential areas of cooperation for the welfare of both countries’ peoples.
The leaders underscored the importance of advancing Bangladesh-Pakistan relations on the basis of mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.
Rahman was elected Bangladesh’s prime minister in February this year.
