Baku is set to significantly expand its pedestrian infrastructure by creating new walking routes that will connect the city's major parks and historical districts. Following the successful pedestrianization of Islam Safarli Street, which links Fountains Square with Winter Park, the initiative is being extended to several other key thoroughfares in the capital of Azerbaijan.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Azerbaijan Surface Transport Agency (AYNA), the Transport Coordination Council has approved the pedestrianization of Alimardan Topchubashov, Lev Tolstoy, Yusif Mammadaliyev, Rasul Rza, and Khagani streets. This project aligns with modern urban planning principles aimed at improving the quality of life for residents and enhancing the experience for visitors to the city.
The targeted streets are home to numerous historical buildings dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries. Currently, these areas face heavy traffic congestion and narrow sidewalks, which limit access to the architectural heritage of the capital. By removing vehicular traffic, the project will create two independent pedestrian routes: one extending from Khagani Garden and Fountains Square to Winter Park, and another reaching Central Park. To ensure accessibility, parking spaces will be relocated to intersecting streets, while provisions will be made for emergency and utility vehicle access.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the government of Azerbaijan to modernize Baku's urban environment. In recent years, the capital has seen a surge in infrastructure projects designed to promote sustainable transport and preserve its unique historical character. Similar pedestrianization projects in major global cities have been shown to boost local tourism, reduce air pollution, and stimulate economic activity in city centers.
