A new major highway is set to be constructed in Baku, connecting the Mehdiabad-Baksol-Ziya Bunyadov route, according to the Operative Information Center-OMM, which cited the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA) under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport.
The project is being implemented as part of the "State Program for the Improvement of Transport Infrastructure in Baku and Surrounding Areas for 2025–2030." The initiative aims to optimize the capital's road network and alleviate chronic traffic congestion.
Currently, rapid urbanization and increased vehicle demand in the Mehdiabad and Binagadi districts have placed significant strain on existing infrastructure. Drivers traveling toward the city center are largely forced to rely on the Binagadi highway, Azadlig Avenue, the Baku-Sumgait highway, and Ziya Bunyadov Avenue. These routes frequently experience severe bottlenecks, particularly at the intersections of the Binagadi highway, Azadlig Avenue, and Ziya Bunyadov Avenue.
To address these challenges, the new highway will directly link the northwestern part of the Absheron Peninsula with the eastern and southeastern parts of the city. The project includes the construction of the Mehdiabad–Baksol–Ziya Bunyadov road, with plans for future connectivity to Heydar Aliyev Avenue and eventually the 8 Noyabr Avenue.
By creating this new corridor, traffic flow will be more evenly distributed. Specifically, the project is expected to reduce daily congestion along the Binagadi–"20 January"–Ziya Bunyadov Avenue line by providing alternative routes for commuters. Furthermore, the project design includes provisions for a dedicated lane for a future tram line, supporting the long-term development of public transport.
The infrastructure improvements will offer significant benefits to commuters. For instance, passengers traveling from the Sumgait-Khirdalan direction toward the Nariman Narimanov metro station will be able to bypass the "20 January" circle and the city center entirely, moving directly toward Ziya Bunyadov and Heydar Aliyev avenues. Similarly, traffic from Masazir will be able to reach the Ahmadli and Hovsan directions without entering the "20 January" circle, while those traveling from the Pirshaghi-Fatmayi-Mehdiabad direction will gain a more efficient route to the southern part of the city, significantly reducing the load on the Binagadi highway.
